4th Day, The Calm

This is a translation of projectMDHM‘s “petite amie magique ~Madoka and Homura’s Exam Week~”.

A short time later…. Papa and Tatsuya called out to us that the bath was free, and went to their bedroom.
Papa had a routine of going to sleep soon after putting Tatsuya to bed.
Mama ushered the reserved Homura-chan to use the bath next.
Meanwhile, I get her change of clothes ready. Since we have sleepovers often, we keep a set of clean clothes at each other’s place.
I go to the dressing room. She’s already in the bathroom, so I call out to her.
【Madoka】 「I’ll leave your clothes in the basket.」
【Homura】 『Thank you, Madoka.』
Her voice echoes from the bathroom.
【Madoka】 「… May I join you in there?」
【Homura】 『D-don’t, Madoka! That’s… still……』
She mumbles something. She sounded more flustered than I expected.
【Madoka】 「I’m kidding, Homura-chan. Take your time warming up.」
If she had said yes, I really would have entered.
But since I couldn’t, I simply returned to the living room.

Mama was still there, pouring herself another glass. When she spotted me, she beckons me over.
I notice a glass set out at the seat across from her. Does she have something to tell me?
I sit down.
【Junko】 「Good work. You really studied hard. Care to join me?」
She raises a bottle of whiskey slightly.
【Madoka】 「When I’m old enough.」
【Junko】 「Oh, better grow up super-fast then.」
When I got up and returned with juice, Mama scooped some cubes from the ice pail into my glass. We exchange a small toast.
After letting out a satisfied chuckle, she spoke in a calm tone.
【Junko】 「… Were you surprised by the stuff about Homura-chan?」
【Madoka】 「Yeah, I was. You didn’t say anything about it this morning.」
【Junko】 「Sorry about that. I thought it’d be better to let both of you know at the same time.」
There our conversation ends. As I wait for her to speak, silence falls over us.
Time passed comfortably. The melting ice made a clear sound as it clinked against the glass.
【Junko】 「She’s a good kid…」
Mama sighed as she said those words she often repeated.
【Junko】 「I’d really like her to be happy…」
She continues murmuring.
【Junko】 「And you’ve grown up to be a very good girl too. I’m proud of you. I’ll always be wishing you happiness…」
【Madoka】 「… Mama?」
【Junko】 「Say, if… she does come for you…. Will you go with her?」
【Madoka】 「… Yeah.」
My mind is set.
I will go with Homura-chan……. And 『marry』 her.
Exchanging vows of loving only one another… an everlasting contract.
She loves me from the bottom of her heart. I want to love and support her forever….
【Junko】 「I see…」
【Madoka】 「Why are you asking such things?」
【Junko】 「I want you to enjoy a normal, ordinary life…. That’s what I think. Of course, I want the same for Homura-chan.」

Mama slightly hardens her voice.
【Junko】 「Right now, you can still turn back…」
【Junko】 「The transition from childhood to adulthood is an impressionable time… you can have fond memories… or at least faint ones, if no one gets hurt.」
【Junko】 「It isn’t that uncommon…」
So, in other words….
【Madoka】 「Are you talking about… breaking up with her…?」
【Junko】 「Not that. 『Think carefully』 about it.」

Diary

I saw her again today. Or rather, she saw me.
I was taking the bus back from campus, my mind wandering.
At one of the stops, someone smiled and waved at me as they boarded.
She explained her car was at the repair shop. Oh right, she drives.
No wonder I didn’t expect to see her again.
Not to mention she doesn’t live next door anymore.
I nodded along to her questions and comments.
Did she spot which of my answers were white lies?
Time was too short to hold a proper conversation.
The bus arrived at my stop.
“Maybe we’ll see each other again next quarter.”
Hopefully.
“Good luck with finals.”
You too.
